Audio Solutions Question of The Week: Are AT-VMN95 Replacement Styli Compatible with AT95 Series Cartridges?

Question: Are AT-VMN95 replacement styli compatible with AT95 Series cartridges?

Answer: No, they are not. The AT-VMN95 replacement styli are made specifically for the VM95 Series cartridge body. The AT95E (and AT95EX) cartridge bodies are different from the VM95 Series cartridge body and their styli are NOT interchangeable as a result.

As of the time of this writing, there are only two models of styli produced by Audio-Technica that are compatible with the AT95 Series cartridge body. They are the ATN95E and ATN95EX replacement styli. The ATN95EX is identical in shape to the ATN95E but the stylus assembly is burgundy in color. A newly designed radial damping ring (the ring that supports the stylus cantilever) allows the ATN95EX to have improved high-frequency response (out to 22,000 Hz versus 20,000 Hz for the ATN95E) and improved transient response.

Note that a significant advantage of the VM95 Series, which is the updated version of the AT95 Series, is the availability of six different types of interchangeable styli, offering a wide choice for every budget and every application. All VM95 Series cartridges use the same electromagnetic engine body.

  1. I HAVE A NEW AT-LP3 TURN TABLE AND AN OLD AT 250 STYLUS
    WOULD IT BE
    WORTH USING THE STYLUS?

    • Hi there! That stylus is technically for a p-mount/universal mount. If you want to use just the stylus it is not going to fit on the cartridge. Please contact our Audio Solutions Team for additional help. You can reach them at audio-solutions@atus.com. Thanks! – A-T USA

  2. Hey guys..
I don’t have as much of a question as much as I have a compliment and comment. About eight months ago I purchased an AT120xUSB turntable in a pinch after my Thorens turntable died. I’ve been pleasantly surprised and satisfied since. I used to think that I had to spend a mere fortune in order to have a quality table but that is not the case. What I like about it most is that it demonstrates to the common consumer that he or she does not need to have depthless pockets to be able to enjoy quality sound. Finally there is a company that understands that everyone has the right to enjoy quality music reproduction regardless of what your income bracket is… And to be able to do so without damaging your record collection. That’s what it’s really about. I like the fact that you appreciate your customers this way. That’s why Audio-Technica is a well respected business with a longevity and a following I believe. In the months since, I did want to make comment on the fact that I purchased a vm95ml Microline replacement stylus for this table to bring it to new heights of performance. Gone is inner Groove Distortion and gone are sibilant passages. And remarkably, it has this uncanny ability just to stick to the groove where any other stylus profile could skip during a hard to track musical Passage or even damage caused by another table. It really gets below all that. Even heavily worn records sound almost blissfully quiet. If that’s possible. It truly has introduced a high end musical listening experience on a beggers budget so to speak LOL. And I recommend any of your customers wishing to improve upon their listening experience choose this option for stylus replacement when the time comes. I will add note though I track mine at 2.6 grams. Just as an observation through my experience with this table and this arm..it performs best. I know
a Microline Stylus is very particular on its set up parameters.. and to get the stylus to visually set at the approximate 92 degree rake angle that seemed to be the weight that was needed to be dialed in. And yes I realize this may be slightly over spec but I think way too much emphasis is put on technical situations in many forums I witnessed throughout the internet that the principal and the enjoyment is lost in the hobby…and if people would stop and realize that specs are perimeters set for approximation and guideline people would get more enjoyment from their equipment by being willing to experiment within reason. And for me.. on this setup..2.6 grams is the result of that experiment and exploration. I also think people need to understand and consider the compliance of today’s cartridges. A lot of psychological “audio head” damage was done back in the day I believe… When everybody believed that ultra high compliance and cartridges that would track a musical note passing through the air was all the Vogue… The results? A lot of damaged records with high surface noise because everybody lightened the tracking weights on all their turntables whether they were capable of it or not. I’ll keep with the current trend of medium compliance carts tracking at 2.6 grams and enjoy my record collection thank you very much. Besides once again I’m reminded it’s a Microline… Putting less wear on my records even with the
greater tracking force because of the greater contact with the record groove. I’m 52 years old. I have owned a lot of record players and a lot of different cartridges with different stylus profiles and none of them have pleased me more than this combination… And some of them we’re quite high on the audio chain. That’s really saying something about the kind of product you put out and the value per dollar. So please by all means keep doing what you’re doing. You’re all doing a great job and I know a lot of us appreciate it very much. Many thanks. Dwayne Wolfe
