Mark MothersbaughFrom his days as a member of the groundbreaking band DEVO, to his work as a Hollywood composer, Mark Mothersbaugh has been dedicated to creating art for over 40 years. This summer, we’re proud to support the first-ever comprehensive retrospective of Mothersbaugh’s work – Myopia at the Akron Art Museum. This fascinating exhibit is presented jointly at the Akron Art Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland (MOCA) and runs through August 28, 2016. Myopia is a career-spanning traveling exhibition of Mothersbaugh’s creative output and includes works on paper, sculptures, installations, music and videos, spanning his years as a founder of DEVO to his ongoing present-day work as a visual artist and composer. Presented in tandem at the Akron Art Museum and MOCA Cleveland, each location has a distinct focus and gives a unique look into a prolific mind. Showcasing the musical end of Mothersbaugh’s career, MOCA Cleveland’s exhibition features his early sketchbooks as well as documentation of DEVO’s earliest performances. The exhibit also details Mothersbaugh’s continual experimentation with musical instruments. The Akron Art Museum focuses more on the visual art Mothersbaugh has created over the years. Sculptures, rugs and prints are all on display. Most impressive however, is a collection of 30,000 drawings done by Motherbaugh that served as inspiration throughout his career. By exploring both exhibits guests will gain a greater understanding of Mothersbaugh’s career and creative output.
